Activities
No specialist knowledge is needed except an interest in history. Members can research a topic in the period being discussed, either suggested by the group leader, or some aspect that they are particularly interested in and then present it to the group at the next session. In this way everyone builds up some knowledge of the period in question. This research work is supplemented by the showing of DVDs.
Round up of 2025
For 2025 we have been looking at the 18th century, the coming of the Hanoverian kings as well as all the changes - both positive and negative- to society that occurred from the Agricultural Revolution to the start of the Industrial Revolution. It was the time of what we now call The Enlightenment, when new philosophical ideas were swirling around that encouraged not only scientific discoveries, but also looked at how the people lived and were treated. It saw the rise of the middle classes who had benefited financially from the ‘revolutions’, but also showed how the working poor were beginning to question their lot in life. This was to manifest itself in violent revolution in France, but not so in Britain.
